Hudsons on Twelfth

You'd never believe me, if I told you that Hudsons on Twelfth is nestled pretty close to the N1 highway in Rivonia if I had to just drop you off there. It was the 1st thing that I noticed when I arrived on a Friday afternoon. You don't hear any traffic! What a wonderful feeling to still be in the city, but feel like you have left the city?

Established back in 1995, the then 'Melleney's' was one of the 1st guest houses in the area with only 4 rooms, which was later renamed. Hudsons on Twelfth has since then been under new ownership of Caroline Hudson, who has been doing renovations to keep the property oozing with the old school charm.

The gardens are still filled with some of the original features from when the property opened & sure add to the look & old school - English Country House feel.

There are now a full 10 en-suite bedrooms, that have been individually decorated & done up with some of the original home ornaments. From your room, you could find yourself overlooking your own private garden, the classic gardens & sparkling pool or the forest that stretches out to the end of the property.

Still feeling the old school vibes, yet with the modern renovations, the rooms have just about everything that you'll need. And if it's not there, you just call through to the reception & it's sorted out for you.

The room we stayed in was large & done up elegantly. An added bonus in this room, is the under-roof, outdoor shower. A must mention, is the linen. I need to find myself some of that linen. It makes your stay so much better when you get into a comfortable bed at night, that has incredible linen. You won't be disappointed.

And then it was dinner time. The evening's dinner was prepared by Chef Wayne Burgin from Chef Knows Best & this is where we got to sit, have dinner & enjoy the evening.

The Amuse Bouche - a Springbok Carpaccio served on a Crostini.

The Starter - a Tian of Tomato & Basil Pesto, served with a Parmesan Crisp & Raspberry Vinaigrette.

Main Course - Beef Fillet wrapped in Prosciutto served with a leak & pea puree on mash.

Dessert - Melted Chocolate Fondant, Raspberry Macarons, Chocolate Cake Crumble & Berries.

What an incredible evening of dinner. You should definitely check out Chef Wayne Burgin & Chef Knows Best, they have some really cool concepts that they work with, which you may actually be in need of.

Breakfast the next morning was served in the dining room. It's a picture perfect haven to enjoy your freshly homemade breakfast after a wonderful evening of rest.

One thing to remember, is that Caroline Hudson wants to keep the old school elements of the property, as that is what makes it so unique. So if you are looking for that ultra modern/state of the art kind of night stay, then this one won't be for you. But, if you are one to enjoy the finer elegance of the years gone by, then this is where you want to find yourself spending some time thinking about the days gone by.

Eco-Friendly Beer... a way of the future?

We all like it when something tastes great & it is satisfying, right?
Well, what better when something is awesome on the palate & kind to the planet?

News just in, Mad Giant's Killer Hop Pale Ale has just been named the overall best beer at the 2018/19 African Beer Awards. With just 3 years of brewing beer for happiness, they soon realised that the only way to smack a smile on, is when you know your impact on the planet & people. With plastic fast becoming one of the biggest pollutants in our rivers & seas, Mad Giant have embarked on a journey to help eradicate plastics.

"It is our responsibility to be friendly to the environment; I want to create a legacy worth something to the next generation." Eben Uys (Brewmaster & Founder)

Now the award-winning Jozi-based brewery is set out to intensify its battle on what they deem to be, & is arguably the world's biggest scourge: single-use plastics.

Changing over to a new cardboard design packaging is a step in the right direction. (And paper in this instance is pricier than plastics!) But their love for beer will keep them brewing at their 1 Fox Street location in the revitalised & vibey spot near the Newtown Precint.

The Killer Hop, made with 4 types of aromativ hops & a touch of malt, is not the only Mad Giant baby, but there is a larger family:
 - Urban Legend; a bold & fruity IPA.
 - Mad Giant; the Lager with hints of honey, biscuit & toffee.
 - The Guzzler; an easy drinking Pilsner.
 - Electric Light; the freshly baked homemade bread Weiss.

You should be able to get some Mad Giant at various locations, but check out the Mad Giant website here to find a stockist near you. Or drop them a mail at info@madgiant.co.za if you're still slightly confused.

Join the conversation online & tag @MadGiantBeer & remember to #SmackASmileOn.

#TintswaloWinterEscape

A stay-over at Tintswalo at Waterfall is just what the Dr ordered.

Located not even 10 minutes from Mall of Africa, is this gem. An equestrian styled boutique hotel that caters for your every need.

Checking-in was #LifeSimplified with my Case Logic gear. Every room is named after a different breed of horse.

A very appropriate welcome for my... A glass of wine already waiting! Now that is what I call service.

Popping down to the restaurant for a quick dinner beside the fireplace is a perfect spot to enjoy a good glass of wine & catch up with other guests or the friendly host.

Bubbly for breakfast is never a bad idea... Looking out over the polo fields early in the morning will definitely get you relaxed & ready to take on the day.

Thank you to Tintswalo at Waterfall for having me & all the spoils.

Date Night @ Crowne Plaza

A Stay at Tsogo Sun's - Crowne Plaza in Rosebank.
(Let's just make it a Date Night.)

Some of the finest upmarket rooms & luxury suites in Rosebank - Joburg. The hotel exudes a contemporary modern feel from the moment you walk in the doors. (One of my favourite things is the smell. The whole hotel has a signature fragrance that follows you wherever you go.)

The Crowne Plaza has a 'Date Night' package available at the moment, that I think is some serious value for money for the stay in this 4 star establishment.

Included is Dinner, Bed & Breakfast for 2...

A romantic turn-down in your room.
Enjoy a 3 course Dinner at CUT, prepared by Nico Brandt.
Be surprised with a complimentary bottle of wine.
Start your morning with breakfast at Fresh Restaurant

So naturally when I was there, I had to venture around to see what's on offer at the hotel.

Outdoor Pool.
Fitness Centre.
Amani African Spa.

Then they have all the other things that make your stay so much more comfortable.
WiFi. Housekeeping & Laundry Services. Childcare Services. So you really have everything right there that you need.

The 3 Course Dinner at CUT.
A set menu with a wide variety of options to choose from will leave you drooling.

I opted for the Creamy Mussels starter. Paired this with the Protea Chardonnay & it was a winner.

The Black Mushrooms with Cheese (And Extra Cheese) is full of flavours & if you are a mushroom lover, then this one is for you.

On to the main meals... The Ostrich Fillet was my first choice. Presented beautifully & with simple elements I was expecting it to be a great dish. Unfortunately, the fillet was more sinew than anything, so I asked to send it back. Our waiter was amazing & then brought out the menu & insisted that they replace my meal with something else. So I then asked for the Calamari, which was deep-fried to perfection & crispy on the outside & tender on the inside. The chicken & seafood curry pot is one big meal that will definitely be leaving you wanting more. Creamy & full of spice.

Before heading up to bed, it was time to head to the new Circle Bar for a final glass of wine. It is a great place to chill & have a few drinks with friends & enjoy the music with some good wine.

All in all, I had a great stay at the Tsogo Sun - Crowne Plaza in Rosebank. It is nice & close to Rosebank Mall & the Gautrain Station if you need to get out, so there are no excuses to venture into Joburg to go sight seeing too.

Check out the Date Night Special here.
If you need to see more info on the hotel, check out the website.
