Janice Honeyman's Cinderella

It feels like only yesterday that I was sitting at Joburg Theatre watching Janice Honeyman's Pantomime - Jack & the Beanstalk last year! But the 2020 Panto is already lined up. With a star studded cast too!

This year, you can expect to see Cinderella on the stage of The Mandela at Joburg Theatre from October through to December. This is THE panto & is known at the fairy godmother of all pantomimes!

We all know the original story of Cinderella... But with Janice Honeyman at the helm, you know you are in for a treat with an abundance of comedy, incredible sets & hundreds of stunning costumes! The most anticipated moment in this show, is when Cinderella is transformed from rags to riches & whisked off to the ball.

Desmond Dube is back again & alongside Ben Voss they will be starring at the two Ugly Sisters. Connie Chiume, making her panto debut as the Fairy Godmother. Kiruna-Lind Devar returns to the panto, fresh from the international stage, that saw her as Meg in The Phantom of the Opera. Kyle Grant is bound to charm audiences as Prince Charming. And what is the panto, without a bit of Graham Hopkins right?

And you can already get your tickets through www.joburgtheatre.com! Best you do that ASAP, as a few of the 72 performances are already sold out!

Nataniël - #WhenGiantsWaltz

Sitting down with one of South Africa's artists that is most probably a household name is something that not everyone would say they have done. But having High Tea with Nataniël really does takes the cake. (Mind that pun.)

There is a new show, waltzing it's way to Emperors Palace. And Nataniël is taking the lead in his 18th production in 18 years at Emperors - When Giants Waltz. Lets be honest, this is one man that gets on stage year on year with a concert that I think is bigger & better than the one before. Nataniël on the other hand believes that the audience knows what they like & you always need to make sure that you don't change it too much.

Nataniël's biggest supporter, his grandmother always said that when things are shaken up, that is when giants waltz. And the world is currently changing at a rapid pace, where 'giants' represent the government, global warming, diseases & the unnatural occurrences on earth that results in humans becoming 'smaller & smaller' over time. That is only the starting point of the show. (A show where every song has a costume change just by the way. So Floris Louw has been working incredibly hard over the last year to put new costumes together.)

Nataniël jokes that this is the 1st show that he really talks about himself, because usually you make up "lies" or tell stories about someone else. This is the production that we have been waiting for. An honest insight into the life & perspective on the world that he so boldly explores, exploits & explains. Delving into the contrasts of BIG and small, the struggle between the threatened & the indestructible. The war between the individual & the establishment.

And dare I say, the debate between the political & the intelligent. (Without actually even discussing politics, as politics, as Nataniël puts it, is organised evil & has never seen anything good come from politics, as it is a last resort. Politics is unattractive & the people in that, dress bad. So it's not something that he wants to bring into his show, because his show is beautiful & is supposed to inspire, which he believes politics doesn't do.

Nataniël explains: "I'm the master of living in a bubble. So this show is a 95 min survival guide to living in a bubble in the modern world." This is going to be a show that you'll be able to experience on more that one level. Sit back & enjoy the stories, costumes & songs or dig into all of that a bit deeper as he elaborates on the evils in the world. But Nataniël does want you to walk into the theatre & lose yourself in the moment & forget about the outside world for a moment of pure entertainment.

When Giants Waltz - Nataniël

If you've seen a Nataniël show before, you'll see some familiar faces - Nicolaas Swart & Dihan Slabbert, who have been working with Nataniël for over 15 years now. These 2 gents who started their careers back in 2003 with the South African boy band - Hi-5, have grown from strength to strength & will be back on stage doing vocals. With Charl du Plessis on Keyboard, Juan Oosthuizen on Guitar, Brendan Ross on saxophone, Werner Spies on bass & Peter Auret on the drums, you know that there is an amazing group of artists that will be there to entertain. These are the guys that have become like family & everyone understands the others, which makes working together a whole lot easier.

This is most definitely not the last that we will see Nataniël on stage. He has his heart set on being on stage until the very last. And why not? The likes of Cher, Barbara Streisand & Bette Midler are still singing & to quote Nataniël, "Patti Labelle now sings the paint off the walls." And interesting fact, Nataniël walks a minimum of 25km everyday. Walking, he believes is the best exercise for the lungs & for the heart that is not strenuous on the rest of the body.

Nataniël emphasizes that the days of stopping with concerts, productions and being on stage, only happens the day you no longer have an audience. And I do think we want to see him on South African stages for a while longer, so get your tickets now at Computicket, for 1 of 12 unforgettable concerts at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace from 4 to 27 October.

Tickets for #WhenGiantsWaltz start from only R160 per person. (That's honestly a steal guys. You should buy tickets for the whole family!)

#PriscillaSA

It's been a show that everyone has been dying to see. And after Sunday evening. I know exactly why. Priscilla Queen of the Desert has finally arrived on stage at the Teatro at Montecasino & in all her glory, she is ready to literally blow you away.

3 Drag Queens
1 Battered Bus
...and the Australian outback?

Doesn't sound like much at 1st, now does that? But don't let that fool you. Well, with over 500 costumes, 200 headdresses, 45 wigs, 120 pairs of shoes & 220 costume changes in EVERY performance. It is pretty straightforward why this show got a full house standing ovation when the curtain closed.

Tick, Bernadette & Adam, 3 very different characters, set off in search of everything they think they will find elsewhere in a performance deep in the Australian outback; little did they know they were going to find a whole lot more.

Daniel Buys (Tick aka Mitzi Mitosis), David Dennis (Bernadette) & Phillip Schnetler (Adam aka Felicia) are the 3 leading queens & each perfectly played their character to the finest detail. From the Bernadette's voice & subtle movements, to Adams fabulous outbursts that just oozed sex appeal, femininity & confidence & Tick being the less extravagant on of the 3.

Another favourite part, is when the 3 diva's descend from above singing. Londiwe Dhlomo, Candida Mosoma & Thembeka Mnguni are simply put just fabulous in all their glory & will sure have you in awe with their vocal abilities.

Less is definitely more. No wait. Less is definitely more when talking about the set. Plain & simple & nothing too extravagant for the backdrops... Besides the famous Priscilla that is now. The battered old bus that goes on this adventure & comes alive with colour as the show progresses. She is kitted out with all the essentials for Tick, Bernadette & Adam to take on the open road.

One thing that I think was definitely a great success for the show. The music. Wow! Music that everyone will know & can definitely be singing along to.
- I will survive.
- Hot Stuff.
- Boogie Wonderland.
- Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
See... All songs you already know majority of the chorus to.

I'm going back to have another round of a bit of a razzle with the amazing cast.

The all South African cast will be on stage at the Teatro at Montecasino until 18 June. This is really one you don't want to miss. And if you don't believe me, go check out the #PriscillaSA on social media & see what everyone else is saying.

#Stil

"Stil" the production that is going to shock audiences. (Well that is what the press release said.)

But. No lies.
I have seen this production.
It is intense.
It keeps you wondering.

Writing this now, I have goosebumps just thinking back to watching Jannes Erasmus & Zöricke Snyman perform this production for a small audience in a school theatre.

The basic outline. An Afrikaans play that follows hopeless romantic journalist & his somewhat "mad/crazy" lover, that you come to think & believe is a teacher. But why is there an Inspector?

"They are nothing more than ordinary people with an extraordinary situation. But who is the 3rd party? What is the quickest way to stop blood? And does the modern day fairytale & happy ending really exist? Come have a seat & you be the judge." The words from Jannes Erasmus himself. (If this doesn't intrigue you even a little bit, well then, you should be prepared for guns, blood & roses.)

The set is designed with only tables & chairs, by the award winning set designer Wilhem Disbergen. The unique U-shaped set offers a setting that is going to keep the audience on its toes & involved in the production taking place center stage in the Momentum Theatre at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria.

The cast includes only 3 individuals.

 - Zöricke Snyman
 - Diani Gernandt

More than this I'm not going to give away.

On stage from 24th of February to the 4th of March. Get your tickets from Computicket here

#Sarafina

"They fear you, because you are young. They fear you, because you are the future."

What's probably one of this country's most iconic symbols of the struggle for social & political freedom & justice, #Sarafina. The Broadway Hit Musical has been described as a musical experience with the songs performed in the tradition of Mbaqanga, fused with jazz, rhythm and blues & gospel. Set in 1976 during the tension of the Soweto uprisings, it deals with the radicalisation of a young school girl who becomes embroiled in the riots & is then tortured by the South African Police. The Morris Isaacson High School is where all the action takes place & is the backdrop of students revolting against Afrikaans being the main medium of instruction.

The original play was created in June of 1986, (before I was even born), and premiered at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg in June 1987, with Tony Award winning actress Leleti Khumalo in the lead role of #Sarafina. It was in January 1988 that #Sarafina took Broadway by storm and culminated in a 2 run in New York City & a 5 year tour of the US. What is even more amazing. The South African cast went on a 4 year world tour, after which the stage production was converted into a film starring Whoopie Goldberg.

2016 marked 30 years of Sarafina & 40 years of the Soweto Uprisings & the production is being funded by the National Department of Arts & Culture, who has urged & encouraged the youth to be a part of the revival of this iconic stage production at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria.

I am sure that this is a stage production that will attract a wide range of audiences to the theatre. Especially with the current challenges that are faced in teh educational system. It will surely help everyone look back & remember the struggles that this country went through to become a democracy & more importance of education.

"You are powerful because you are the generation that will be free."

I'm pretty excited to go see this show. Opening on 28 February 2017 in the Opera Theatre at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria. It is bound to challenge my ideas & thoughts on how things happened back in 1976. With 24 year old, Noxolo Dlamini in the lead for the production. She holds a BA in Dramatic Arts from UP & has her acting career tracks from her childhood, following through high school, when she went to the National School of Arts for 2 years nurturing as an artist. So I believe she is very suited for the role & I look forward to seeing her take on this performance to show us what she's got.

Tickets are available from Computicket here.

#BlueManGroup

So if you haven't heard of the #BlueManGroup yet, I suggest you check them out ASAP. So when I heard early last year that they would be visiting Joburg in 2017 I was super excited. It is a show that I have been wanting to see for ages now. Finally... They are here!

What started out as 3 college friends developed a bald & blue character called 'Blue Man', and then the Blue Man Group show, which is now an award winning show that has been performed in over 20 countries & has been seen by over 35 million people worldwide.

It is most certainly a very dynamic combination of art, music, comedy & the latest technology celebrating the human connection is something for everyone. And that I can reiterate. I saw the show on the opening night at the Teatro at Montecasino. An incredibly interactive show with the 'Blue Man' connecting & engaging with the audience throughout the show.

It has been described as "The Only Show as Colourful as Life." It certainly lives up to that expectation. It is difficult to describe exactly it is what you are watching. I just know that it was super entertaining & a great show overall. Keeping the crowd fixated on their movements, expressions & actions is what really sells the show for me.

They incorporate local music in their show too. Which was an added bonus for majority of the crowd when the late Mandoza's "Nkalakhata" sounded out from the stage & drums & everyone immediately recognised the tune.

The Blue Man Group is on stage at the Teatro at Montecasino until 5 March & you can get your tickets at Computicket. I suggest you do that quickly. I rate they are going to sell out soon if the word spreads too quickly about how much everyone enjoys the show.

Check out these snaps that I took during the show.

The show ends in one collaborative play pen of throwing balls & streamers around like children.

This is something that you don't want to miss out on...

#WestSideStorySA

It's a story that we all know. And now it's on stage in Jo'burg at the Mandela Theatre.

The Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents & Stephen Sondheim theatrical masterpiece first premiered on Broadway in New York back in 1957. Bringing to the stage iconic songs: "Something's Coming", "Maria", "I Feel Pretty" & "Tonight" is a cast of 40 which is backed by a full Philharmonic Orchestra. Included in the cast are well known names such as Jonathan Roxmouth, Lynelle Kenned, Chris Jafta, Bianca le Grange & Craig Urbani.

So you know I'm not a theatre expert or the biggest critic. I just love watching a good show. But I know when something is good & when it's not. I'm not there to take the show apart piece by piece & analyse it, then give you feedback. I'm one to tell the average man on the street, or man in the theatre if they'd enjoy the show or not.

On that note. I really enjoyed watching #WestSideStorySA.

The stage! Lets start there. I must say, that is what really impressed me the most. Scene changes happened without a glitch & would change in the motion of the production, so before you knew it, the setting had already changed. The set is simple & takes you straight to the back alley's of the Upper West Side in New York where the Jets & The Sharks get up to a lot of mischief.

The musical score is and has always been one of the greatest. That has not changed & the suspense that builds up inside you as the music explores the rivalry between the 2 street gangs is intense. The music sure brings out emotions within you whilst watching. I know it sure did for me. Heart racing as the pace of the music picks up as the The Jets & The Sharks run away from the police.

Stellar performance from Jonathan Roxmouth & Lynelle Kenned in the lead roles of Tony & Maria. Like I always knew they could sing.  But this was just on a whole new level. I really loved Bianca le Grange as Anita. I think she definitely gets that Puerto Rican accent done perfectly & I kept having a little giggle when she would speak. Oh, and for those of you, who didn't know Chris Jafta can act. And yes, he can act pretty well as Bernardo and he is not just a pretty face on Top Billing.

Okay, so end of story. I think it is a must see if you enjoy a good musical. Like it's not your normal happy go lucky kind of musical with a happy ending. But I love that fact. It tells a story of 2 lovers that are torn apart by racial & social entised conflict ending in death & tragedy. You should leave the theatre with a sombre, yet elated feeling.

West Side Story runs at Mandela Theatre until 5 March.
Get your tickets on Computicket now. (Preferably before they are sold out.)

The tribute show has taken the world by storm & is a fun & heart-felt concert which is dedicated to the incomparable Whitney Houston. The show celebrates the magnificent catalogue of hits that Houston made famous during her 30 year career, including hits like ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go’, ‘I’m Every Woman’, ‘I Will Always Love You’ & many more.

Starring the breathtaking voice of Belinda Davids live in concert & direct from sell out shows across Europe, together with a full band, dancers & theatrical effects, the show is not just a brilliant tribute but a spectacular concert experience in its own right & should not be missed!

During an interview with B Sharp Entertainment during her 2015 run in Johannesburg, Davids was quoted as saying: “I want people to remember Whitney for when she was amazing, for when she was the power house, for when she was the voice, for when she was this amazing artist. She worked very hard. Her mother instilled a great work ethic in her. But I want people to remember Whitney when she was at the top of her game.”

Cirque Éloize iD

Cirque Éloize iD is here again...

So I saw this show 2 years ago, back in 2014 when they toured to Johannesburg at The Teatro at Montecasino. All I'm going to say is that I am very excited that they are back in SA for another show. The bewildering, high-energy production, which incorporates acrobatics and street dance will blow you away.

Starting off in Cape Town on 16 November and after only 15 performances the performance moves up to Johannesburg and will be back in the Teatro at Montecasino from 30 November until 24 December.

Under the direction of Jeannot Painchaud, Cirque Éloize iD is brought back to SA to you by Showtime Management after having been enjoyed by over 3 million people in over 4000 shows in almost 500 cities across the world in 50 countries since it's very first show in 2009. (If this doesn't scream International, then you should read this last paragraph again.)

Acrobats, Aerialists, Trail Bikers, Hip-Hop & Break Dancers have come together to create a society, in which 2 groups celebrate everyone's distinct identity with its high-energy blend of circus art & urban dance. Most definitely a production for the young at heart and featuring an inspiring soundtrack & innovative video projections.

The cast of 15 have worked together with composers Jean-Phi Goncalves & Alex McMahon to incorporate innovative multimedia elements with a rock & electronica inspired soundtrack.

"The runaway success of the show's first season in 2014 says it all - this is a unique & massively exciting show for the whole family," says Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management, who added. "This mind-blowing fusion of new theatrical circus and urban dance is an absolute must "do" on every year-end calendar!"

The trampoline-finale is quite spectacular. The energy & poetry of the show will surpass your expectations and is guaranteed to leave you in awe. This is honestly a show like no other and if you have not seen Cirque Éloize iD, then you have never seen anything remotely similar in SA.

Tickets are available from Computicket.

And we are running a competition on social media, where you can win 1 of 2 Double Ticket to the opening night on 30 November 2016 at Montecasino.

Robin Hood & the Babes in the Wood

ROBIN HOOD AND THE BABES IN THE WOOD
A BRAND NEW PANTOMIME ADVENTURE FROM JANICE HONEYMAN

Riding through the royal forest of Sherwood on a glorious May morning, you don’t have a care in the world.  Then you hear a bird call, the faint rustling of trees, and suddenly a man armed with a longbow appears in your path.  He wears a feathered cap, or is that a hood?  You can’t see the man’s face clearly, but you don’t have to.  He is dressed in Lincoln green, the colour of Robin Hood – the most famous English outlaw of all time.

The earliest surviving Robin Hood ballad, Robin Hood and The Monk, dates from the 15th Century.  Subsequently, the legend has become one of the most popular movie and TV stories of all time: from Robin Hood and His Merry Men, a 1908 silent film; to British television’s long-running series The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955-59); to 1973’s Walt Disney’s Robin Hood; to Mel Brooks’ hilarious Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993); and to the 2010 movie Robin Hood, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe.

And now comes Janice Honeyman’s brand new pantomime adventure, Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood, on the stage of The Mandela at Joburg Theatre from November 5th to December 30th 2016.

The plot combines the babes-lost-in-the-forest story with the Robin Hood legend.  The young children, Hansel and Gretel, come to visit their uncle, the Sheriff of Nottingham, little suspecting that he is plotting their demise.  But never fear, help is at hand – in the shape of Robin and his Merry Men, plus Maid Marian and the Spirit of the Forest!

Playing the role of Robin in his first Joburg Theatre pantomime is Izak Davel, best known to TV viewers as Isidingo’s arrogant Bradley Haines, and whose hit recordings include Verlei My, Is Jy In Of Is Jy Uit and Vreesloos.
Much loved panto star Desmond Dube returns to Joburg Theatre to play the jovial Friar Tuck, Idols finalist Bongi Mthombeni features in his fifth Joburg Theatre pantomime as the dandy Will Scarlet and leading lady of South African musical theatre, Kate Normington, will surely be wildly comic as Silly Sylviana, the Spirit of the Forest!

Also featured in Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood are Graham Hopkins as the villainous Norman the Nasty, Sheriff of Nottingham, L J Urbani as the ever-popular panto Dame Emmarentia Ugly, Phumi Mncayi as chief lieutenant of the Merry Men, Little John, award-winning actress Candida Mosoma as Much the Miller’s Son, the beautiful Carmen Pretorius as Robin’s love interest, Maid Marian, and Jaco Van Rensburg as the wandering minstrel, Alan-a-Dale.

Joining them in the all-South-African cast are; TeeKay Baloyi, Darius Engelbrecht, Clive Gilson, Nuritt Graff, Kyra Green, Dirk Joubert, Dolly Louw, Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri, Tsepho Ncokoane, Noni Nkonto, Dale Scheepers, Natasha Van Der Merwe and Maryanne Van Eyssen.

“It’s an exciting year for us when Janice Honeyman writes a brand new pantomime script,” says Bernard Jay, Executive Producer of the panto. “We don’t know exactly what to expect until the last minute, but we do know it will be full of her magical flair for story-telling, spectacular special effects, zany comedy and outrageous double entendres!”

Writer/Director Janice Honeyman has collaborated with producer Bernard Jay on their sixteenth Joburg Theatre pantomime together. Musical direction under Rowan Bakker; Nicol Sheraton as choreographer; the eagerly anticipated, over-the-top, fabulous sets & costumes are supplied by Qdos from the UK; Lighting design by Graham McLusky; sound design by Trevor Peters; and Director Timothy Le Roux.

Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood has preview performances on The Mandela stage at Joburg Theatre on November 5th and 6th with tickets from R170.  The official Opening Night is Sunday, November 6th and will be on stage until December 30th, with tickets priced from R220.

Over 30,000 tickets have already been sold for this year’s panto, so best to hurry and get yours now for South Africa’s most popular family entertainment tradition.
Tickets are available by visiting www.joburgtheatre.com or calling 0861 670 670, as well as through Webtickets and at Pick ‘n’ Pay stores.
For group bookings of 10 or more, contact the theatre directly on 011 877 6853/6815.
